Choosing between .com.au, .au and .com
The ending does more work than most people expect. Here is the short version of the seven we sell.
- .com.au
- The default for Australian business. It tells customers you trade here, and it is the ending most Australians type from habit. If you register one name, make it this one.
- .au
- The shorter direct form, open to the public since 2022. It stands on its own, and plenty of businesses register it beside their .com.au so nobody else can.
- .net.au and .org.au
- .net.au suits technical and network services. .org.au is meant for the non-commercial side: clubs, associations, charities and community groups.
- .com, .net and .org
- The global classics. Register one if you sell beyond Australia, or to keep your brand covered beyond it.
Who can register a .com.au or .au domain?
The .au family is reserved for registrants with an Australian presence, which for most buyers means holding an ABN or ACN. When your cart includes any .au name, checkout asks for that number and for the type of entity registering it: sole trader, company, non-profit and so on. We pass that eligibility declaration to the registry with your registration.
The global endings have no such rule. Anyone can register a .com, .net or .org.
A person reviews every order before it is lodged, so an honest slip in the eligibility details is caught early.
What happens after you buy a domain name
Payment is handled by Stripe, and your order reference appears on screen straight away. We then register each domain by hand and email you once it is active.
The name is registered with you as the registrant on record, not us. It stays yours for the full term you paid for, including if another studio ends up building the site that sits on it.
Common questions
Is the listed price per year?
Yes. Every price on this site is a yearly rate in Australian dollars, GST included, and a multi-year term is that rate times the years you choose.
Can I transfer in a domain I already own?
Not yet. This store handles new registrations only, so a name you already hold elsewhere should stay where it is for now.
What is a premium domain?
Registries price some short or sought-after names individually. Those sit outside our standard rates, so checkout asks you to contact us for a quote instead.
Do I need hosting or a website first?
